Lil Nas X walked back into a Los Angeles courtroom almost three months after his arrest, and the moment felt like the start of a new chapter. It was not flashy or dramatic. It was steady, calm and, in a way, hopeful. For someone known for bold music videos and fearless red carpet looks, this appearance was much quieter but just as meaningful.
A First Court Appearance Since Treatment
This was the first time the star had been seen in court since completing the inpatient treatment program he entered soon after his Aug. 21 arrest. His lawyer, Drew Findling, stepped outside after the hearing and made it clear that things were looking up.
“As you can see, Montero is doing amazing, doing great and we’re super happy for him,” Findling told reporters, according to Rolling Stone. He followed with even more confidence: “We’re looking forward to a positive resolution in this case, which we’re very confident of.”
Lil Nas X is scheduled to return to court on March 12.
Why He Missed the September Hearing
The musician was not present at a September court date because, at the time, he was in treatment out of state. His lawyers said he checked in after the August arrest and release from jail. After the newest hearing, Findling again emphasized the focus on his client’s well being.
“We’re doing what is best for [Lil Nas X] from a personal standpoint and a professional standpoint, but most importantly, for his well being,” he said, according to Rolling Stone. He added that the artist “is surrounded by an amazing family, an amazing team of people that care about him and love him. He’s had a great life, and he’ll continue to have a great life. This is a bump that he’s going to get over.”
What Led to the Charges
Lil Nas X was arrested on Aug. 21 after police responded to calls that he was allegedly walking around naked along Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles, according to an LAPD spokesperson. When officers arrived, the star allegedly used “force and violence [to] inflict and injury” on three officers, according to a criminal complaint reported by PEOPLE. The complaint also stated that he “did unlawfully attempt by means of threats and violence to deter and prevent” a fourth officer from performing their legal duty.
He appeared before a judge on Aug. 25, waived his arraignment and pleaded not guilty to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. His bail was set at seventy five thousand dollars. He was also required to attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings each week. Lil Nas X was released from jail the same day.
His Own Words After the Arrest
The day after he got out, he posted a video on Instagram Stories, giving fans a quick but emotional update.
“Your girl is gonna be okay, boo. Okay? S---’s gonna be all right,” he said. “S---’s gonna be all right. S---. That was f---ing terrifying. That was terrifying. That was a terrifying last four days. But your girl is gonna be all right.”
His attorney Christy O’Connor pushed back against the idea that drugs played a role in the incident. “Assuming the allegations here are true, this is an absolute aberration in this person’s life,” she said in court, per the Associated Press. “Nothing like this has ever happened to him.”
What Comes Next
According to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Lil Nas X could face up to five years in prison if convicted. For now, his team is focused on stability, recovery and moving forward. And as his lawyers hinted, they believe that with support and time, this difficult moment will not define him.
Lil Nas X will be back in court in March, but for the moment, he seems to be standing on steadier ground than he was in August.
