A new Trader Joe's will move into the empty Bed, Bath & Beyond building on Route 1 South in Woodbridge, according to Mayor John McCormac's State of the Township speech on March 6.

"The most sought-after American-owned and operated grocery store is finally coming to Woodbridge after we beat out all of our neighboring towns that have been competing to attract it. Yes, we are talking about Trader Joe's," McCormac said.

The grocery store is just one of many updates reshaping the township's business district. In Iselin, electric car company Rivian plans to take over the old Sports Authority building, while Sprout's Organic Farmer's Market is coming to Cloverleaf Center.

Cloverleaf Center will bring in $26 million in tax revenue. Thanks to new state rules, large shopping centers can now have four liquor licenses. This measure is aimed at attracting more restaurants and entertainment spots.

The empty Lord & Taylor store at Woodbridge Center won't stay vacant much longer. Accu-Reference Labs is moving in soon, bringing hundreds of jobs. Mall owners continue looking for new stores to keep up with online shopping.

Beyond retail, construction projects dot the landscape. A fancy Cambria hotel is going up in Avenel, bringing $9 million in taxes. At the Vito Mazza location, a mix of restaurants and homes should add another $5 million to local taxes.

In Keasbey, plans for a huge warehouse covering one million square feet shows the area's rapid growth. Officials expect the facility to bring in $97 million in taxes over thirty years.

More changes are coming as an Avenel junkyard turns into warehouse space. New housing is popping up too, including a 17-unit senior living facility and special homes for veterans to meet community needs.

While they haven't announced when it will open, residents are excited about finally getting their long-wanted Trader Joe's. The store will help revive what used to be an empty storefront.
