At Newark Symphony Hall, Assistant Schools Chief Yolanda Mendez led this year's Latina Empowerment Brunch. Popular Community Bank and Wellpoint supported the event.
The crowded event brought together students with experienced professionals and city officials. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka joined Deputy Mayor Jacqueline Mercado-Quiles to welcome attendees.
Three key speakers took the stage; Police Lt. Gloria M. Caballero, reporter Esperanza Ceballos, and former Perth Amboy mayor Wilda Diaz. They shared personal stories about advancing in challenging careers.
"One of the special joys of my work with the city is this annual brunch, as it accomplishes two important things," said Mercado-Quiles to patch.com. “First, we pay tribute to Latina women who have distinguished themselves by effort and energy. Second, we deliver important messages to the young ladies in attendance today, which inspires them to achieve their own personal greatness, in whatever field they choose to enter.”
Taking the stage, Diaz talked about her experience as mayor. She emphasized the importance of women taking leadership roles.
Young students made up most of the audience. These events connect aspiring students with successful professionals. These relationships create opportunities for emerging talent.
This aligns with Newark's efforts to support its Latino community. Past speakers who've shared experiences include business owners, teachers, and community activists.
Lt. Caballero spoke openly about police work challenges. Ceballos discussed breaking into journalism. Their honest discussions resonated with the audience.
Each year, this event connects professionals with newcomers. Young participants get to learn from those who succeeded before them.
