A Salute to 5 of My Favorite Teachers on World Teacher Day
Today and every October 5th is World Teachers Day. We all have a favorite teacher. A teacher that when we think of them, we have fond memories. We may not have felt that way back when they were teaching us, but we’ve learned to appreciate them later in life.
I have a few favorites who may never know how they helped make me become the person I am. It’s simply recalling the way they spoke to us in a way we could relate. They were fun, but didn’t go too far with it. They weren’t pushovers and disciplined when necessary.
So, here are a few “thank yous” to some of my favorite teachers.
Mrs. Epstein – 7th Grade Homeroom and English Teacher – Benjamin Rush Middle School, Philadelphia, PA
Thank you for catching me, Tony Cipriano, and Matt Coleman cutting school one day. While I still remember that day being one of the best days ever, I appreciate the way you handled the situation. A great deterrent without making me hate you. In fact, I really liked you.
Mrs. Dennis – 9th and 10th Grade French and Spanish Teacher – George Washington High School, Philadelphia, PA
Thank you for encouraging me to switch from French to Spanish. I wasn’t doing well in French, and you thought Spanish would be better for me. As you know, you were right, and I excelled in Espanol. You made it so easy to understand, and I loved your Judge Judy style of handling a classroom. Gracias!
Mr. Flaxman – 10th Grade Biology Teacher – George Washington High School, Philadelphia, PA
Wow! In a class I thought I would hate, you made it incredibly interesting. I could tell you put a lot of thought into each class. I will never forget how you understood the way I thought a little differently and took that into account when teaching and grading. I unexpectedly aced the final exam which made me realize I was learning because of the way you taught. Life changing!
Mr. Lynch – 11th Grade English Teacher – George Washington High School, Philadelphia, PA
Thank you for being funny, really, funny. You made the class a ton of fun while making it possible for us to actually learn many things. When someone was out of line you shut it down quickly and moved on like it never happened. You were so honest and demanded the same from your students.
Mr. Teplitz – 12th Grade English Teacher- George Washington High School, Philadelphia, PA
If I had to pick one favorite teacher, I think it would be you. You were not only funny like your buddy Mr. Lynch, you really made me think. I loved your deadpan and dry humor. You would begin what I thought was just a funny commentary at the beginning of class, and it would turn into something that encompassed the day’s lesson perfectly. You were so interesting as a teacher and a person. I think about you often. Thank you so much!
Happy World Teacher Day to all teachers, everywhere!
