He emphasized that while Somerset County and its local municipalities diligently prepare for disaster response on a daily basis, it is crucial for residents to do the same. By fostering a culture of preparedness, the community can work together to safeguard the lives of their cherished family members and friends when disasters inevitably strike.
The elderly hold a special place within the Somerset County community, and in recognition of their significance, the county will use National Preparedness Month to spotlight ongoing efforts to meet the distinctive needs of this age group. By providing accessible resources that can save lives, Somerset County is committed to ensuring that older adults are well-equipped to face any emergency.
The American Red Cross has identified several factors that render older adults more vulnerable during and after disasters. These include an increased likelihood of grappling with chronic health conditions and medication-related concerns.
Moreover, the reliance on assistive devices like walkers, hearing aids, glasses, and support from caregivers can compound their vulnerability. Additionally, older adults may encounter challenges stemming from social isolation and mental distress in the aftermath of a disaster.
Certain segments of the older adult population, such as those who live alone, have low incomes, experience disabilities, or reside in rural areas, face even greater hurdles during emergencies. This predicament is further exacerbated by the rising frequency of climate-related extreme weather events. In light of these challenges, Somerset County residents are encouraged to adhere to the following safety guidelines, both for themselves and for the older adults in their lives, to ensure preparedness for the next emergency:
- Emergency Supply Kit: Create a well-stocked emergency supply kit containing essential items such as non-perishable food, water, medications, medical supplies, important documents, and other essentials that can sustain older adults for a minimum of three days.
- Communication Plan: Develop a communication plan that includes emergency contacts, both local and out-of-town, to ensure that older adults can remain connected with loved ones even if local communication networks are disrupted.
- Medication Management: Keep an updated list of medications, dosages, and any special instructions, and ensure a sufficient supply of prescription medications is readily available. Pharmacies may be inaccessible during disasters.
- Mobility and Accessibility: Account for mobility challenges by considering transportation options and ensuring that assistive devices such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs are readily available.
- Social Support: Establish a network of neighbors, friends, and caregivers who can provide assistance and support during emergencies, particularly for those who may experience social isolation.
- Weather Awareness: Stay informed about weather forecasts and potential hazards specific to the region, and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks.
- Emergency Evacuation Plan: Develop an evacuation plan tailored to older adults' needs, considering factors such as transportation and accommodations.
By heeding these guidelines, Somerset County residents can contribute to a safer and more resilient community, ensuring that older adults are adequately prepared to confront any emergency or disaster. As National Preparedness Month unfolds, let us join together to prioritize the safety and well-being of every member of our community, regardless of age or circumstance.

The category 3 hurricane also known as "Superstorm Sandy" devastated the East Coast with it especially taking a tremendous toll on New Jersey and the Jersey Shore.
The Department of Environmental Protection's data revealed that 346,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, 2 million people lost power, and 38 lives were lost. This totaled up to $30 billion in economic damage for the state of New Jersey.
Now, ten years later, we are looking back at what some are still recovering from to this day in the year 2022. The destruction of Hurricane Sandy sustained 80 mph winds, a record-breaking storm surge, and even swept away some of the most famed landmarks in the state.
No matter where you were that day, what grade you were in, what job you had, or how old you were, everyone has a story to tell. And although the photos below were taken ten years ago, they will never get easier to look at.
