Some say lack of eye contact is a telltale way, while others rely on speech patterns or certain types of body language. Even lie detector tests aren't reliable. Now, there's a new way to tell if someone is telling a fib and it's based on our body temperature.
According to Eureka Alert, there is a groundbreaking study by researchers at the University of Granada, when we lie, our noses and the little muscles by our eyes start feeling heat. The research says that gives us what is being called the "Pinocchio effect," The "Pinocchio effect" is an increase in the temperature around the nose and in the orbital muscle in the inner corner of the eye. Research also shows that when we strain our brains, body temperature lowers while the opposite is true if one were having an anxiety attack.
However, that's not the whole story.
These lie-detecting detectives have discovered that both men and women get heated up in the same physiological way. Thermography can even detect sexual excitement and desire by simply observing the rise in certain body part temperatures. It was also found that different dance styles have their own thermal footprints. When we dance we have a cool behind and warm forearms.
Thermography is the new emotional thermometer, unveiling the intimate connections between our bodies and minds. It can detect everything from emotions and empathetic suffering to body fat patterns and even aid in the diagnosis of various medical conditions.
So, the next time you're trying to hide your true feelings, remember that thermography has its infrared eyes on you. "Thermography can also be applied to determine body fat patterns, which is very useful in weight loss and training programs. It can also be applied to assess body temperature in celiac patients and in patients with anorexia," among others.
