Needless to say, I was not happy to read this article. There is a latest threat to good health that experts are warning us about. Excessive noise, according to new research covered in the New York Times. Noise pollution adversely affects the lives of millions of people.
Researchers say unpleasant noise affects not only the brain, but nervous and endocrine systems, increasing the risk of hypertension, stroke, and heart attack - and the louder the noise, the greater the risk. Problems related to noise include stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss, sleep disruption, and lost productivity. Long-term exposure to noise can cause a variety of health effects including annoyance, sleep disturbance, negative effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic system, as well as cognitive impairment in children. Scientists recommend an average nighttime decibel level of 40db or lower to prevent health effects, or under 30db for the best possible sleep.
