The Treasure State Becomes the 1st State to Completely Ban Tik Tok
Montana has become the first state in the U.S. to ban Tik Tok. The bill was signed into law by Montana Governor Greg Gianforte to comprehensively ban the Chinese-owned app.
Other states have banned Tik Tok on government-issued devices over national security concerns, however, Montana’s ban takes it a step further. The Montana law blocks the app from operating inside the borders of the state. The law also penalizes app stores for offering the app for download within the state.
The law, which goes into effect on January 1st 2024 will not fine or penalize users, but will fine app stores and Tik Tok for allowing the app to be accessed or downloaded. The fines will be as much as ten thousand dollars a day.
TikTok is just one app tied to foreign adversaries. Today I directed the state’s Chief Information Officer to ban any application that provides personal information or data to foreign adversaries from the state network. pic.twitter.com/92Im6D9Jgx

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte posted; “The Chinese Communist Party using TikTok to spy on Americans, violate their privacy, and collect their personal, private, and sensitive information is well-documented. Today, Montana takes the most decisive action of any state to protect Montanans’ private data and sensitive personal information from being harvested by the Chinese Communist Party.”
The ban is expected to face a mountain of legal challenges from multiple opponents such as free speech advocates, the ACLU, and Tik Tok itself.
We received a mixed bag of reaction when discussed this morning. It was pretty obvious that callers who use Tik Tok were not happy about the news. Those who aren’t Tik Tokers seemed to be less concerned about the possibility of the ban happening in New Jersey. Then there was one woman who felt that all social media should be eliminated or banned.
