Rihanna Announces Role in “Blue” Comedy and Will Write Music for Soundtrack
Rihanna is going to be a mother of two, and it looks like she wants to take on a project that her kids can enjoy and is more family-friendly.
Riri is going to play Smurfette in an upcoming animated Smurfs film. The big announcement was shared today at CinemaCon, the Las Vegas convention for movie theater owners. But wait there’s more, Rihanna will also be a producer on the movie, and write and perform original music for it too. It’s currently being called Untitled Smurfs Animated Film, however, I don’t think that’s the title that they’re going to stick with.
According to Variety, Rihanna appeared onstage to talk to the convention attendees and joked, “I tried to get the Papa Smurf role but it didn’t work out.” The pregnant Caribbean Queen is not only expecting her second child, she also confirmed that she is in her third trimester.
Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins told the crowd, “With Rihanna’s singular creative appeal and musical talents, there is an enormous opportunity to elevate the cultural touchstone of The Smurfs universe in a way that’s never been done before.”
Back in 2011, a combo of live-action and animation movie called The Smurfs, was in theaters. Coincidentally, it starred Rihanna’s good friend Katy Perry in the Smurfette role. The cast also included Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Sofia Vergara, and George Lopez.
In the original TV show, Smurfette was created by the evil wizard Gargamel to infiltrate the Smurf village. However, Papa Smurf managed to transform her into a real Smurf using a magic spell.
Smurfette is a sweet, kind, and nurturing Smurf. She is also intelligent and resourceful, using her knowledge of chemistry to create potions and solve problems for the village. Throughout the series, she plays a variety of roles, from damsel in distress to hero, and is an important member of the Smurf community.
That sounds like something Rihanna can handle, and the movie could be just as that other franchise that features blue characters.
