Internet Reacts to Couple Breaking Up Over Super Bowl Commercial
I was watching the Super Bowl with my family and friends when the Tubi commercial came on. I could tell right away that something wasn’t right because the video seemed different and the announcers, Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen, spoke generically. As soon as the Tubi channel changing part came on I said, “it’s fake.” However, everyone turned to me asking me why I was changing the channel. I repeated, “it’s not real,” and by that time everyone realized. It did keep us talking about it for a minute or two so I guess Tubi accomplished their goal. Now we’re still talking about it. This commercial will be remembered for many years to come.
Were you among the people Tubi fooled when they aired their Super Bowl commercial? They made it seem like someone was changing the channel during the big game, and it looks like it resulted in at least one breakup.
A Reddit user posted on the Off My Chest thread, claiming to be a 23-year-old woman who broke up with her 25-year-old boyfriend after his crazy reaction to the 15-second commercial. She wrote “My boyfriend thought I was the one changing the channel and began screaming at me violently, calling me things that I don’t even want to write down. Even as I told him it was a commercial he ignored me and kept blowing up at me and punched a hole in our living room wall.”
The boyfriend, whom she had dated for over a year, eventually realized it was a commercial and apologized. “Off My Chest” felt the damage was already done, so she gathered her things and left to go live with her parents the very next day, the day before Valentine’s day. Good for her!
She said, “I left him a note telling him how I felt and that I didn’t think we were going to work out long-term.” She also said that her parents took his side and that she was the one who overreacted. They apparently told her, “He had a bit to drink and the Super Bowl gets everyone riled up.” She disagreed, “I don’t think it’s normal to be that angry.”
I think she’s absolutely right. Most Reddit users are agreeing with her, and told her not to give the boyfriend a second chance.
Reddit user “Marlievey” wrote “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” – Maya Angelou. Believe him, he’s got an impressive collection of red flags.
“Logirl1975” said, “What I can’t understand is the parents’ reaction? That man got violent with their daughter?! Shouldn’t that elicit even a vague protective response?”
And “itsOkami” shared, “Jfc, that ad is not even 10 seconds long. It only took him that much to insult you and punch a wall, ultimately destroying your mutual trust? Yikes, that’s scary. You deserve much better than that, mad respect for standing your own ground.”
