Woman Wrongfully Declared Dead Wakes Up In a Body Bag
This is a nightmare of a story. This story seems like a horror movie that you see during the Halloween season. The NY Post says an Iowa woman recently woke up in a body bag gasping for air. The 66-year-old woman, whose name not released, was declared dead by staffers at her nursing home at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa. A nurse thought the patient was unresponsive and dead and asked another nurse to confirm her finding. The other nurse at the Alzheimer’s care center said she agreed that the patient was unresponsive. They called the woman’s daughter to notify her of her mother’s passing and then contacted the funeral home to pick up the woman’s body. The woman was then placed in a body bag for transportation to the funeral home. When staff members at the funeral home unzipped the body bag, to their surprise she was alive and gasping for air. The woman woke up and was struggling to breathe. She was taken to the hospital where she lived for another two days. The woman’s nursing home has been fined $10,000 for improper care.
I am surprised to see that the nursing home was only fined $10,000 for this mistake. I not only feel sorry for the woman but for the daughter who was told her mom was dead, and then not dead, then dead again when she finally passed at the hospital!
