Teacher Adopts Student
ABC says a Connecticut elementary school teacher has adopted the student she was fostering. Connecticut teachers and spouses Jenna and Tim Riccio say their “family is complete” after they adopted one of their students, 10-year-old Nate Innocent Riccio. Jenna Riccio says her son was shy when she first met him in class. ‘Nate’ has sickle cell anemia and was hospitalized in September 2019 for emergency surgery. Not knowing that Nate was removed from his family home and had no visitors, Jenna decided to go visit him in the hospital. Upon discharge, Jenna learned that Nate was to be sent to a foster home which was located more than an hour away from the school. His school was a place where he felt comfortable and happy. Being worried about Nate and his well being, Jenna realized she had plenty of space for Nate at her home, which is near his school, so she casually asked a Department of Children and Families caseworker if she could become his foster parent. She took parenting and adoption courses and applied to adopt Nate. He was a ring bearer at her wedding. Jenna says, “He’s gone through so much in his 10 years he’s been on earth and he wakes up every day with a smile on his face, ready to tackle the day. He is an inspiration … not just to me and Tim, but every single person in our family.”
