Well, thankfully it seems the second trailer lived up to most fans’ expectations and was even able to win over some who were worried about the film ever since Chris Pratt who is voicing Mario was mocked on social media for the way he was portraying the character. He did earn some credit back by saying one of Mario’s famous catchphrases ‘Yahoo’ and it didn’t sound that bad, but in reality, this is a single sound if he wants to gain more trust with the viewers it’s going to take a lot more.
So, they made Princess Peach a badass who defends her people instead of a helpless woman in the Mario Movie...

WE LOVE TO SEE IT. #MarioMovie pic.twitter.com/NMLyqiN2pD
Another slight change was the actions and personality of Princess Peach, as most of the games threatened her as a damsel in constant distress, the Mario movie has different plans as Peach is portrayed as a strong-willed ruler who will defend her people. Some are saying that this choice was made to pander to a younger audience, though honestly, it doesn’t feel like that to me. I’ve seen pandering for shows and movies that were butchered. This feels more natural and is done fairly well so I’m okay with it.

We were also given key scenes like Mario facing Donkey Kong in an arena that pays homage to the first Donkey Kong arcade game that was made in 1981. This is the oldest title in their multi-decade-long career. We were also given a few seconds of the cast driving on a rainbow using go-karts. This of course is a shoutout to their long-running Mario Kart spinoff and each scene is beautifully done. So visually it’s safe to say Illuminations knocked it out of the park.
We’ll have to wait and see what other content we’re given as the Mario Movie is going forward with a planned premiere date of April 7th 2023. I doubt we’ll get a third trailer though I want to remain hopeful.
