Bad Flu Season Coming
Will we be spared from the hype of a really bad flu season? This year’s flu season is expected to be bad for us this year. Australia’s flu season was a doozy—and that’s not a good sign for us. Australia, which is in the southern hemisphere and experiences its flu season before ours, had the worse flu season they had in five years.
Many people have not been exposed to the flu over the past few years due to COVID-19 restrictions and low circulating levels of the flu. You may wonder why it matters and may even think it is better to not be exposed to the germs of any virus. Immunity to respiratory viruses, including the flu, wanes over time. Since the pandemic, a lot of people had not been exposed to viruses. Symptoms usually start within 1 to 4 days of close contact with another person with flu. The flu is usually not serious in healthy adults. Most people with the flu do not need to be seen by a doctor.
Dr. Allison Arwady tells the network NBC, “The southern hemisphere has had a very bad flu season during their winter. Australia is coming off the worst flu season they’ve had in five years, with levels much higher than they’ve seen in either previous years. All signs point to this being quite a bad flu season, and my worry is if we had a bad flu season on top of a bad COVID season, that really has the potential to threaten our healthcare systems.”
