Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale will star in Ryan Murphy’s (American Horror Story creator) upcoming limited Netflix series, The Watcher, which is based on a true story that occurred New Jersey.
The streaming platform released the trailer on Sunday (Sept. 26) and finds Watts and Cannavale, playing a married couple, moving their family into a new home in the suburbs of New Jersey. However, the trailer shows that everyone in town including their home’s anonymous “watcher” might want the couple to quickly put the “for sale” sign back on the front lawn.
“Do you know the history of the house? I’ve been put in charge of watching you. This message will not be the last. I am the watcher,” reads an introductory letter from the stalker. “Your home is my obsession. Now, you are too.”
The trailer plays an eerie rendition of the late Olivia Newton John’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
As much as the happenings that occurred in 675 Boulevard might creep you out, the fact that the house is based on a true story from Westfield, N.J., makes this Netflix series even eerier.
Just as the trailer suggests, a couple moved into the Westfield home back in 2014 and began receiving letters with no return address in their mailbox, per The Cut. Dereck and Maria Broaddus, the actual owners of the home, were directed by law enforcement to not tell their neighbors about the letters as they could be potential suspects.
One of the first letters received by the Broadduses by “The Watcher” read:
Dearest new neighbor at 657 Boulevard,
Allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood.
657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out.

The Watcher comes to Netflix October 13th.
