What Do You Think About a Nightclub that Bans Staring?
Happy magazine says a Sydney, Australia nightclub has banned staring. Club 77 says people must first get verbal consent before staring at others in the club. They hope this will discourage people from coming to their club if their “sole purpose” was to meet someone to “pick up”. What happens if you don’t get consent? A failure to get verbal consent could result in the police being called. Safety officers will be on hand. The Safety Officers will wear pink vests and patrol the club to make sure no one violates the new policy. Club 77 in Sydney gave staring as an example of an action that would be in contravention of its new safety and harassment policy.
It reads; “As a nightclub, we encourage you to interact with strangers, however any engagement MUST begin with verbal consent. This also applies if you are, for example, staring at someone from afar. If the attention you are giving someone is unwanted, that is considered harassment. If you’re being harassed by another person or receiving unwanted attention, please seek them out or tell our staff immediately.”
Club 77 owner Dane Gorrell says, “Someone could stare at someone and make them feel uncomfortable, they could be staring at them for quite some time. People want to go out, they want to feel safe, they don’t want people chasing after them, the response to it has been extremely positive.”
