What is Splooting? It’s Not What You Think!
While we’ve gotten a bit of a break over the past couple of days, it’s been one of the hottest summers in recent memory. Many of us are finding anyway and every way to stay cool. Cool drinks, oscillating fans, swimming, and ice cream or water ice are some good ways to keep our bodies from baking. However, here’s something that you may not have tried, splooting!
What is it? Is it harmful? Is it dangerous? Why haven’t I heard of this?
These are all good questions, so let’s answer them.
According to Collins Dictionary it means, (when animals) “…lie flat on the stomach with the hind legs stretched out behind the body,” and “the act or an instance of splooting.”
Dictionary.com defines it as “slang for the pose an animal, especially dogs, cats, and other four-legged pets, makes when it lies on its stomach with its hind legs stretched out back and flat.”
“Dogs, cats, and other four-legged pets” are doing this to stay cool. Apparently they’re finding a cool spot on the grass or sidewalk sploot. However, Not just dogs and cats are enjoying a good sploot. Squirrels also occasionally choose to partake in the splooting craze. The New York City Parks Department tweeted out a message about the squirrels. It says, “If you see a squirrel lying down like this, don’t worry; it’s just fine. On hot days, squirrels keep cool by splooting (stretching out) on cool surfaces to reduce body heat. It is sometimes referred to as heat dumping.”

Apparently, some people are thinking the little guys are dead, but when they attempt to dispose of their little bodies, the squirrels “come to life” and run off.
So, whatever you are or how you keep cool, we’ve all learned a new word today. And whatever plans you have today, I hope it includes a nice long and satisfying sploot!
