A turtle was the cause of a three-car crash on Stone Harbor Boulevard in Cape May, New Jersey on Tuesday, June 28.

The turtle was crossing the road when one of the drivers slammed on their brakes to avoid hitting it. Stopping triggered a chain of rear-endings, as another car then slammed into the first vehicle before a third car crashed into both of them.

According to the New York Post, all three vehicles were “badly damaged” but nobody was injured.

The local fire department later wrote to Facebook, “Please make sure that when you stop for a turtle, the drivers behind you have time to stop. We realize the desire to not hit a turtle, but you and others are just as important.”

Someone even shared a video in the “Cape May County Fire Wire” Facebook group live from the scene.
