Is it Socially Acceptable to Charge Guests for a Dinner Party?
Imagine getting invited to your friend’s house for a dinner party. You are excited to see friends, having a few laughs, and making some memories. You return home and think what a fun night you had. Your belly is full from the homemade pasta that your friend made for you. Then, your friend, the host of the dinner party, has sent you an undiscussed Venmo request for $20. They’re charging you for the home-cooked meal you’ve just enjoyed together! Is the homemade pasta worth $20? Is it worth telling your friend they are a jerk and ending the friendship?
This really happened to Amber Nelson who posted about it on Twitter after being charged $20 for homemade pasta at a dinner party she’d attended. Most people did not agree with the host charging for a dinner they offered to make. I say if you bring your presence and maybe a bottle of wine, appetizer, or desert, you more than paid your fair share! –Maryann Morgan
