Early Monday morning at around 8:17 am, there were multiple 911 calls received regarding a fire at the South Ridge Apartments in South Brunswick, New Jersey.
When first responders arrived on scene, they saw a man sticking his head out the 2nd floor window trying to escape the smoke & flames from the apartment which was on fire. When they got closer to the building, the man threw his baby out the window so the firefighters & police officers could catch him/her. Seconds later, to escape the fire outbreak, the man jumped out of the window head first & was caught by police officers.

The first responders who saved them both have been identified as Sergeant William Merkler, Patrolman First Class Ryan Bartunek, Detective Sergeant John Penney, and Fire Chief Chris Perez. Both the father, child and four others received minor injuries and one person was taken to a nearby hospital.
Many residents of the apartment complex are now without a place to live. The Red Cross came on scene to assist about 50 residents without a home due to the fire.
