This past weekend (February 19-21) was National Girl Scout Cookie weekend. It’s a time when cookie lovers of Thin Mints®, Samoas®/Caramel deLites® and others are inspired to seek out and stock up on their favorite small cake. A purchase of just 1 box of Girl Scout cookies is an investment not only for your taste buds, but more importantly it’s a contribution in empowering and building the future of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ to change the world.
And if you are the Belleville New Jersey American Legion, you buy 120 boxes and donate them to our troops deployed overseas. The last 2 years combined, the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey used their “Cookies from Home” campaign and donated almost 200,000 Girl Scout cookie packages to front line workers.
Despite their philanthropic efforts, last year Covid19 created a big challenge for the cookie drive. The Girl Scouts found themselves with many unsold boxes. According to Fortune.com, the pandemic left them with 15 million boxes unsold. As we are all very aware, the scouts rely on “in person” makeshift booths to sell their stock.
That was not a welcomed dilemma. Cookie sales fund many of their programs. Fortune.com also reported that typically over 200 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies are sold each year. That equates to about 800 million dollars. Before 2020, you couldn’t go to a strip mall without being asked to support the Girl Scouts; Last year, not so much.
Never count the Girl Scouts out. A little innovation was added to their sales efforts, as a small town in Virginia delivered Girl Scout Cookies by drone, right to their customer’s door steps. And NJ.com reports the Girl Scouts have teamed up with Door-Dash and Grub Hub to deliver your cookies to you where ever you are.
