Love was noting the similarities between the artwork and her band Hole’s Live Through This album cover from 1994.
Rodrigo acknowledged the similarities herself, commenting on Love's post, “love u and live through this sooooo much.” To which Love responded, “Olivia—you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for deets! I look forward to reading your note!”
Love wrote multiple comments on Facebook over the weekend as well, adding more thoughts about the Sour Prom concert film promo pictures.
"it was rude of her , and geffen [Rodrigo's label] not to ask myself or Ellen von unwerth [Live Through This album cover photographer]," Love wrote in the comments. "It’s happened my whole career so I d c . But manners is manners !"
One user wrote under the Facebook post, "This is a silly thing to get mad about. Artists steal all the time. See Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and countless others. Plus she’s a kid. Why not be proud of the impact you have on her and others, instead of sniping at someone paying homage or borrowing one of your ideas? Its especially silly for anyone from the grunge era to complain about stealing. Since grunge bands took from each other all the time. Some cyber bullying vibes on your part. Be an elder stateswoman, not a bombthrower."
Love responded to this by saying, "I am both . Your version isn’t mine . Stealing an original idea and not asking permission is rude. There’s no way to be elegant about it . I’m not angry . It happens all the time to me . And he really I’m very gracious or say nothing . But this was bad form . That’s not bullying or bomb throwing . This persons music has nothing to do with my life . Possibly never will . It was rude And I gave every right to stick up for my work . Don’t gatekeep me ! I’m honorable as f--- to my fellow artists , and I expect the same ."
Twitter users rallied behind the "Driver's License" singer, calling Love, "a 56yr old, picking a one sided fight with olivia rodrigo, a 18yr old, over a concept that wasn’t even hers to begin with while olivia just ignores her and doesn’t give af is ridiculous bye."
Another user wrote, "so basically courtney love is pissed bc she says olivia did plagiarism with one of her covers from the 90s (as if she owned the concept of prom or crying lol)"
