Baking Substitutions: What to Do if You Run Out of Egg, Baking Soda or Buttermilk
- It always happens, it’s past 10 pm and you’re holiday cooking when you run out of eggs, the store is closed and you have to get your favorite holiday treats finished for the office Christmas party.
- So what to do if you run out of things like eggs, baking soda or buttermilk during the holidays? If you’re out of baking soda, use baking powder, four times the amount of baking soda the recipe calls for or self-rising flour, which contains baking powder and salt.
- No flour? Use a 1:2 ratio of cornstarch. Eggs can be replaced with applesauce, mayonnaise or mashed bananas. If you’re out of buttermilk you can use plain yogurt at 1:1 ratio.
- No baking powder? Use cream of tartar, lemon juice or club soda. If you’re out of corn syrup you can use maple-flavored syrup, agave nectar or honey.
