Joined by a small string section, Miley Cyrus live debuted her new single “Slide Away” at the MTV VMAs. It was her first live performance of the track, which she dropped earlier this month. But it was also her first performance since announcing her separation from husband Liam Hemsworth.

Cyrus kept things low-key for this performance, which was filmed in black and white. Fittingly, she also wore a little black dress for the stripped down performance that had her and her microphone taking center stage.

There was no pomp and circumstance, just Cyrus singing her little heart out. She let the lyrics of the breakup track do all the talking. The stripped down performance was an emotional one that had Cyrus singing, “I’m not who I used to be.”

And with this performance she proved that Miley may have changed, but she still knows how to leave a crowd wanting more.
