Obviously, don’t read this if you’re a Game of Thrones fan and you haven’t seen the series finale, which aired Sunday night (5/19). But — SPOILER ALERT — unsurprisingly, a lot of fans weren’t happy with the way the story ended.
It’s never easy to wrap up a long-standing and much-beloved series — reactions to the endings of Lost, The X-Files, Dexter and True Blood, to name a few cult series, were negative. And the final episode of Game of Thrones had a lot of work to do, particularly after an incredibly unpopular episode last week, which saw Daenerys Targaryen become the Mad Queen, as well as the deaths of Cersei Lannister and her brother Jamie, as well as the Mountain and the Hound.
So, how did fans react to the finale fare? (we warned you, spoiler alert!) saw Daenerys die, Bran Stark become King of Westeros (with Tyrion as his Hand), Sansa Stark become the Queen of the North, Arya Stark exploring to find out what is west of Westeros, and Jon Snow returning to the Nightwatch, and quickly ditching his post to go north with the Wildlings?
Well, a lot of fans didn’t like it. Here are some of their reactions:
Absolute terrible ending to an epic show #GameOfThronesFinale

Someone please tell D & D there was nothing bittersweet about this ending, it was shit. That’s it just shit. Not bitter not sweet just shit. Thanks. #GameOfThronesFinale

This has to be the worst ending I’ve ever seen in any show ever. 8 seasons for that crap of an ending? #GameOfThronesFinale

I was one of the ones who defended episode 5, but holy shit, that finale was bad... THAT was rushed. Lack of dialogue, no build up, the whole episode didnt make sense. #GameOfThrones #gameofthronesfinale

Bran’s surprising ascension to the throne was one of the less popular moments:

Bran being king is basically like when the group does all the work but you only do the final presentation #GameOfThrones #GameOfThronesFinale

One moment that did seem popular was Jon Snow’s reunion with his dire wolf, Ghost.

You know the episode was underwhelming when we just wrapped up 10 years of narrative and the thing people care most about is someone petting a cgi dog #GameOfThronesFinale
