My alarm goes off pretty early in the morning.  The only thing that helps me get my feet on the floor in the morning is the aroma of the coffee brewing.  I set the pot up the night before and set the time for the coffee start brewing.  This way I am guaranteed to  have a nice cup of coffee waiting in the pot when I come down.  I have often wondered if it's the taste or the smell of the coffee I like better.

A study was made by researchers at Toronto University and Monash University which showed people perked up when they got a whiff of coffee brewing. They discovered that the smell of coffee provides a placebo effect that causes spikes in ambition and focus. As long as people see a connection between coffee and alertness,  without  ingesting any form of caffeine you will respond.  This is because the brains of habitual coffee consumers are conditioned to respond to coffee in certain ways.

So walk past your favorite cafe, smell the odors of coffee grinds, sniff your cup of coffee and trigger the chemical receptors in your body to obtain the same sensations without consumption. - Maryann Morgan - Joel & Maryann in the Morning
