To Everything There Is a Season… and a Song
So we were asked to write about a song that really was a game changer for us. Now that’s a tough one since I’ve always loved music. I’ve been racking my brain. In fact, I’ve started writing about 3 different songs so far. But each time, I’ve ripped the pages from the typewriter and crumpled them into the garbage can! (Okay, I lied, I just hit backspace a million times in a Word document.)
As I was writing, a song came on, and immediately, I realized that this was the song. I remember hearing it first on reruns of The Wonder Years, and then every time I heard it on the radio afterward, my ears would always perk up. Simple, yet profound. (Fun fact: It’s adapted from a Bible verse, but there’s nothing really religious about it.)
The song? “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” by The Byrds. It’s a major throwback, but something about the song has resonated with me throughout so many parts of my life. Yes, I’m 28, but the message was true when the song was released and remains so today.
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heavenA time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late
We all experience the “ebbs and flows” of life. We leave home to start a new chapter in a brand new place. We change jobs. We fall in love. All the while, people, places and things enter and leave our lives simultaneously. Change is inevitable. But each has its purpose – even the ones we don’t expect or really want to happen. We just have to find it. And music will always help us do that!
