It’s 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve in any year. The clock turns to 12…the ball drops…the glasses are raised. Before you know it, you wake up late on January 1 and you missed that special New Year’s Day spin class at the gym you just signed up for. And so it goes for another year.
Does this sound a little like you or someone you know? It happens to the best of us, but here’s the good news – fitness is a lifestyle, not a number, day or year.
Regardless of whether this is your millionth time committing to getting in shape or your first, here are some things to think about as you start 2018. It isn’t a diet prescription or a workout, but a way to think about fitness. It’s also very consistent with what I wrote on these pages in 2016 and 2015 as the new year began. Here are your 2018 tips, courtesy of Women’s Health:
- Don’t commit to cutting anything out entirely. Let’s face it, we’re going to eat Christmas cookies, Valentine’s Day chocolates, Easter egg candy, boardwalk fries, Halloween candy…well, there went the year already. Focus on treating yourself in reasonable quantities, and focus on how your body feels after eating them.
- Food is not a number. Strip away the points and labels, and think about what the food you’re about to eat represents. The grilled chicken is always the better choice over country fried. The less processing, the better – no processing is ideal. Eat as nature intended.
- Use your well-being – and loved ones – as motivation for working out, not guilt. When you don’t feel like exercising, think about how being healthy is better for you and those who love you most.
